7 Quirky Ways to Beat the Heat This Iowa Summer Without Central Air

When the Iowa summer turns your home into a makeshift sauna and you haven't yet installed a central air system from Obsidian Heating & Cooling, you might need to get creative to keep cool. Here are seven unconventional yet somewhat effective ways to chill out during those scorching summer days. Warning: hilarity (and slight discomfort) may ensue!

1. Become a Fan of the Fan

No air conditioning? No problem! Strategically place fans around your home to create a turbo wind tunnel. For an added Arctic effect, position a bowl of ice in front of each fan. This won't replace a central air system, but you'll feel slightly less like you're living on the sun's surface.

2. DIY Air Conditioning

Grab that styrofoam cooler out of the garage, cut some holes in it, throw in some ice (or frozen vegetables if it’s before payday), and point a fan into it. Presto! You’ve got yourself a homemade air conditioner. Sure, it’s no Obsidian Heating & Cooling installation, but it’s a close second...or maybe a distant third.

3. The Kwik Star Cool Down

Head to your nearest Kwik Star and grab a cup of that good nugget ice. Methodically rub one nugget at a time over your face to cool down. It’s a slow process, but every little bit helps, right? Plus, you get to enjoy the perplexed looks of passersby!

4. Become Nocturnal

Why fight the sun? Adjust your schedule to sleep through the hottest part of the day and emerge in the cooler evening hours. Your new vampiric lifestyle might raise eyebrows, but at least you’ll be embracing the cooler side of the twilight.

5. Chill Your Sheets

Not metaphorically—literally. Throw your bed sheets in the freezer for a few minutes before bedtime. Sure, sharing space with frozen pizzas and ice cream might seem odd, but you’ll thank us when you're not tossing and turning in a pool of your own sweat at 2 AM.

6. Fashion a Sprinkler Day Spa

Who says sprinklers are just for gardens and kids? Set up a sprinkler system in your yard, put on your bathing suit, and start your hydration rotation. It’s refreshing, fun, and gives neighbors something new to talk about besides the weather.

7. Ice Bucket Challenge—Rebooted

Remember the ice bucket challenge? It’s time for a revival, but this time, it’s not for charity—it’s for survival. Regular dousings might spike your water bill, but can you really put a price on relief from the heat?

While these tips might provide some comic relief (and minor physical relief), they’re no substitute for a professionally installed central air system by Obsidian Heating & Cooling. If you're tired of gimmicks and ready for a real solution, give us a call or shoot us a message. We’ll help you find the perfect system to make your home a cool oasis during the hot Iowa summer. Until then, stay frosty!
